npviewer.bin and gstreamer applications like rhythmbox and totem don't show this behaviour. I just observed, that this overamplification seems to be linked to audacious and xmms. Post added at 12:04 PM - Previous post was at 11:14 AM. Only the internal audio meter seems to be chopped to a fraction of it's original space and results in hard clipping of sound at very low output volumes. I took the screen shot of the internal audio and equalizer meters at +0dB flat equalization, which equals no amplification at all. The +9dB just add +9dB to the general problem. But as I said: This strange behaviour occurs with no amplification at all. I have no idea where to look into this strange behaviour.Īs you can see in my first screen shot the EQ output meter is far from reaching it's limits while the Internal Audio meter is (nearly) at the maximum level though the volume remains unchanged. It's like the headroom on internal audio gets chopped off using the EQ. Enabling the equalizer even with a totally flat (0dB) preset makes the Internal Audio meter go up and sound clips as the meter reaches it's limits at unchanged (low) output volumes. They play just fine without the equalizer. Yup, I check the audio with undistorted files. Last edited by Chilly Willy 25th November 2011 at 09:47 AM. I used some music I had downloaded, some movies, (some downloaded, some online) & some youtube that I was familiar with how it should sound. A FLAT setting seemed to be best for me, though.īTW: I assume that whatever you are using for your audio is OK & not crappy in any way & you are checking with more than one thing.

What I usually do is go through the presets & see what curves come close to what I want, then go from there. The best I can say is to play with the setting & see what gives you the best results. Around 12dB was tolerable on some stuff but when I pushed it to 15dB it really went crazy, especially on music. I played with mine a bit & 9.9 was as high as I could go w/o clipping on all the audio things I run.

With proper drive, I can see this being a bit much. I see that the 50Hz slider is at 9dB, THAT may be doing the clipping as I'm running mine flat, all at 9.9dB & I've got that card issue. With the way you have the EQ set, if anything it should be ATTENUATING the output when it's in use.
